The New York Yankees defeat the Giants, now of San Francisco, to take the World Series in baseball. Jackie Robinson is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In football, the Green Bay Packers become NFL Champions, defeating the New York Giants, 16-7. The Boston Celtics win their fourth straight NBA title, this time defeating the Los Angeles Lakers. Jack Nicklaus wins the U. S. Open Golf title. Dawn Fraser becomes the first woman to swim 100 meters in less than a minute. A horse named Decidedly wins the Kentucky Derby with jockey W. Hartack. |
