The Soviet Union and Israel reestablish diplomatic relations. The Soviet government demands that the United States stop the distribution of free food in East Berlin. In Washington D.C., U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower requests the Soviet government allow the U. S. to send $15 million in aid for East Berlin. In California, Lieutenant Colonel William Barns establishes the air speed record at 715.7 miles per hour. In Managua, Central American states convene and agree to fight Communism. Guatemala was absent from the discussions. |
This year in sports, the Yankees defeat the Dodgers to win their fifth World Series in a row. The Braves move from Boston to Milwaukee. Detroit defeats Cleveland 17-16 to become the National League Football Champions. In Tennis, Australia wins its fourth straight Davis Cup as Ken Rosewall defeats Vic Siexas. Siexas, however, wins the men´s singles title at Wimbledon. In the NBA, Minneapolis wins over New York and Neil Johnston of Philadelphia becomes this year´s scoring leader. Rocky Marciano KO´s Joe Walcott in the first round. "Dark Star" wins the Kentucky Derby. |
